Thanks for the Memories

This issue marks the end of my tenure as editor of the Red
Journal. I wish to express my warmest appreciation to the
many individuals who did the work. The excellent associate editors, the editorial board, the peer reviewers, and especially the colleagues from many scientific communities
who contributed excellent manuscripts were all essential
to the success of the Red Journal over the past five years.
Christina Shepherd has been an outstanding managing editor, and Patricia Ames and Diane Cala have kept the
manuscripts and reviews flowing in peer review. The support staff in the office suite we occupied in Scottsdale were
professional and attentive. Finally, the American Thoracic
Society and American Lung Association can, I believe, be
very proud of their contributions to disseminating the very
essence of improved patient care, the results of basic research, into the pathobiology of respiratory illness.
I leave the journal in the very capable hands of Michael
J. Holtzman, Seldin Professor and Director of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine section at Washington
University School of Medicine. Dr. Holtzman has proved
himself as a seasoned and scholarly associate editor who
can be counted on to maintain and improve the already excellent quality of the journal over the next five years.
Thanks to all for a job well done.
