About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover: Effect of treatment with phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC) on the reactivity of pulmonary ciliated and intermediate epithelial cells (obtained by BAL) for ART1. Control (upper and middle panels) and PI-PLC-treated (bottom panels) cells were reacted with anti-ART1 primary antibody followed by FITC-conjugated secondary antibody; nuclei were then counterstained with DAPI. Scale bar for all panels = 10 µm. The panels along the left show confocal microscopic images, in which immunoreactivity is shown in green and nuclear structure in blue. The panels along the right show the corresponding images created by superimposition of the green fluorescence signal (ART1) on a Nomarski differential interference contrast image to demonstrate the morphology of the cells. (Upper panels) Untreated ciliated epithelial cells show immunoreactivity in their apical portions. (Middle panels) Untreated intermediate cells show reactivity along their surfaces. (Bottom panels) Pretreatment with PI-PLC caused a marked reduction in the immunoreactivity of ciliated epithelial cells for ART1. For more information, see article by Balducci and colleagues 337.
