Cover: A PET image (obtained with a microPET R4 scanner, Concorde MicroSystems, Knoxville, TN) from a mouse 3 d after intratracheal instillation of Pseudomonas-laden agarose beads into the right lung, and 1 h after intravenous infusion of 100 µCi of F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose, an analog of glucose taken up by metabolically active tissues (in this case, neutrophil accumulation within the infected lung). The image is in the coronal plane, below the level of the heart, with the animal in the supine position. Colors are scaled so that higher levels of activity are in orange and red ; lower levels of activity are in blue and purple. Intense activity is seen in the right lung. Other areas of increased activity below the lungs are in the kidneys and bladder (fluorodeoxyglucose is excreted renally). For more information see Translational Review by Schuster and colleagues beginning on p. 129.
